Brewing 101 - IPA

Want to learn how to brew beer, but aren't sure where to start?  CHAOS's Brewing 101 class is for you.  A CHAOS brewer will lead you through all of the steps necessary to brew your first beer using malt extract and steeping grains.*  This class will focus on the basics of brewing, including an introduction to grains, extract, hops, and yeast.  We will also introduce students to the required equipment and cover appropriate sanitation practices.  Our recipe will be decided very soon and listed below.

Once students have brewed their beer, they can ferment it in CHAOS's temperature-controlled fermentation room.  Future classes will provide instruction on bottling and carbonating the finished beer.  The recipe will result in approximately 5 gallons, or around 48 12oz bottles of beer. Students can expect drinkable beer in 4-6 weeks.

YOU MUST BE A MEMBER TO ATTEND THIS CLASS. Trial Member or above (click HERE for membership info). Web-only members may not attend.

Please RSVP using the "I will attend" link below.  Class size will be limited to 4 batches.  However, multiple students can work on a single batch of beer if they want.

Shopping list (all items available at Brew & Grow or Brew Camp):

  • Equipment:
    • Fermenter (bucket or carboy);
    • Lid/cap;
    • Airlock;
    • Muslin grain bag.
  • Ingredients
    • 7 lbs. Light DME
    • 1 lbs. Wheat DME
    • 1 lbs. Crystal 60
    • 5 oz. Cascade hops

PRO TIP: Hops are a commodity that are very hard to predict availability...if the hop that is listed above happens to be out of stock, don't fret...there are substitutes that can be found.  Ask an employee or click here.

* Although there is no charge for this class, students must provide their own ingredients and fermenter.  See the above shopping list for more information.

Hey Jim! I'm looking at gear

Hey Jim! I'm looking at gear on the Brew & Grow website and see a few different sized carboys. Is the 5 gallon the right size for this?

I would go with a 6 gallon.

I would go with a 6 gallon. Always Better to have more head space at the top for blow off purposes.

Hey Jim, would liguid malt extract be okay to use or would it have to be dried malt extract?

If you don't mind, get DME. I wouldn't be opposed to it if the math worked out but you only need 1 lb. of wheat and, if I recall correctly, the LME cans come 3.3 lbs each. You can get the exact measurements you need if you get the DME and not waste any.

Thansk for clarifying and I purchased the DME. I also purchased yeast, it wasn't mentioned in the ingredients but I thought I would play it safe. Thanks again.

Oh yeah, I meant to ask about that! I thought that same thing when I was at Brew Camp, and I figured it couldn't hurt to grab some to be on the safe side. One of the guys working there suggested the 1056 American Ale from Wyeast: will that work?

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to ask: should I sanitize equipment beforehand, or is that something we'll do there before we begin? I know how important that is, so I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

1056 Will work just fine. In fact, it will be a nice, little experiment: same base, different yeasts.

Don't worry about sanitizing; plenty of sanitizer at the brewhouse.
