A deep-dive workshop into the popular American IPA style. This workshop is open to anyone and will be of interest to both homebrewers and non-brewers, especially those who want to hone their palates.
The workshop will have three components:
- Talking through the style (BJCP #21a), its history, comparison to similar styles, and its sensory components
- A guided tasting of four commercial examples
- Conversation about brewing the style
One of the commercial examples we'll taste will be On Tour Brewing's Reprise. On Tour's brewer, Dave Campbell, will join us, as will On Tour's cellarman and CHAOS member Eric Mott. They'll share the recipe for Reprise and talk about their brewing techniques and process.
CHAOS members Jeff Whelpley and Jim Vondracek will lead the workshop. Jeff is a BJCP certified-rank judge and a certified cicerone, and has led a variety of workshops and classes on brewing, styles, flaws and pairings. Jim is a BJCP national-rank judge, serves the BJCP as assistant representative for the Midwest region, grades BJCP exams, has taught a beer styles and tasting course at the City Colleges of Chicago, and is the editor at Brewer's Friend.
There is no up front cost for the workshop, but we will ask attendees to pitch in for the cost of the beers we taste.
CHAOS requires people attending events inside its brewhouse to offer proof of covid vaccination or a recent negative test result.
