Wood Sources and Barrel Buy Organizing

I'll update this list as I get info.

FEW Spirits in Evanston- "They have oak barrels used once, rye or bourbon. What's different is that they are 5 Gallon barrels, which allows for a fast aging. They are selling them for $150. From time to time they also have 10 G barrels."

Farmhouse Brew Supply-

I have 2, 10 gallon brandy and rum.

1 15 gallon rum

I can get 10  gallon whiskey as well

No 10 gallon whiskey just 5 gallons

Got my barrels yesterday. 5 gallon barrels are so f'n small! Baby barrels.

The date on the barrels show that they were dumped about a month ago. The barrels are american oak that held blue corn whiskey.

The price is nice for these barrels and they look to be in good shape. However, I've heard that the surface conatct ratio means that it is really easy to over oak a 5 gallon barrel. I've seen people recommend only 10 days in the barrel. Some say a month. I guess for the first one, I'll just have to keep on taste testing it every few days.

I'll try to post a picture later in the week when I have some free time.

Paul Hletko, paul@fewspirits

Paul Hletko, paul@fewspirits.com  .  He said they usually have rye and bourbon 5 gallons and that they'd do them for 150 or discount us if we got multiple. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll place an order for us.

I looked into a few places in

I looked into a few places in WI. One place in madison is emptying barrels on the 26th of Aug. But...they only have 53 gallon barrels.

I think the FEW sipirts barrels are a nice size. Do you have contact info of some that you spoke to at FEW?

is anyone still interested in

is anyone still interested in getting barrels?  I haven't seen any activity on here.  If anyone wants barrels they should be organizing amongst themselves whether on this thread or outside.  Ideally everyone will have their barrel or oak source by august 15th.

Does anyone have any questions?

I am, and I have some

I am, and I have some connections at Koval Distillery in Andersonville. I know they are charging $100/Barrel for the public and do smaller size barrels  Single use too. I'm sure we could work out a deal with them. Let me know if I should engage them a bit more.
