T-Shirt Ideas

Hi all.  I've been wanting to do a couple of small fundraisers, to help underwrite capital improvements at the brewhouse.  Steven Lane and I were visiting about this and we decided to work together on a t-shirt that we could sell, to club members and others.  Stay tuned for more details.

But for now, we'd love to get your ideas for tag lines that could be used on the shirt.  The graphic would change to fit the tag line.  To prime the pump and get your ideas flowing, here are some from homebrewtalk:

Not All IPAs Are Hazy

Everything's Better in a Barrel

Yeast Wrangler

Ale's What Cures You

What's In Your Fermenter?

I'd Dry Hop That

Hoppocratic Oath: Brew No Harm

Its Not a Beer Belly, Its A Homebrew Storage Device

Hopsologist

I Brew the Beer I Drink

Malt. Hops. Yeast. Water.

It Hurts When IPA

Homebrew: Damn Right Your Dad Drank It

Cogito Ergo Sum Coquo (I think therefore I brew)

Carpe Brewem

Floccin' Good Beer

Just Brew It

Abs Are Great, But Have You Tried Beer?

Add your own, please!

Hahaha. I think you have some

Hahaha. I think you have some real winners there, Jim! I see at least 3 of those as future Tshirts of mine. I love this idea.

So how would we implement this? Obviously keeping an inventory would be pricey and not very efficient. I'm sure Steven knows more about this - but I had a friend once that designed Tshirts. He gave his design to an online company, and every time someone ordered if offline he was sent royalties. This would have the benefit of not having to keep all these in stock - they would always be "in virtual stock."

Also, if this takes off, we could copyright the design (even though apparently it's protected once it's been conceived: "Copyright protection automatically attaches to an original work of authorship from the moment of creation and fixation."

Here are two simple links I found on the subject. Again, Steven would know more about this being an artist.
http://info.legalzoom.com/copyright-logo-shirts-25689.html
https://www.howtostartaclothingcompany.com/how-to-copyright-t-shirt-designs/

Once we get a feel for the most popular designs we could order them specifically for parties and sell them there. And if we do get an online shop running (again, this would only require uploading images to an already established company) we could push the products on all the homebrewing forums. $$$

Just my 2 cents.

Im in the early process of starting up a local company to produce short run highly customizable tee shirts etc.  This is hinging on my contact who had a failed UFC clothing line selling me his equipment on the cheap.  Keep me posted if this progresses.

@Josh that would be ideal! If you were the printer and could shoot CHAOS some royalties with each purchase, you and the club could both make some extra cash. Win/win.

Sounds like we're coming up

Sounds like we're coming up with something clever and witty but what ever happened to that graphic wheel Steven came up with for the styles? I thought that was destined for a shirt; or, did I misread somewhere?

These are great, thanks

These are great, thanks everyone.  More are welcome.

Josh, I'll talk with you before we get to production and see if your friend's equipment worked out and our timelines match up.  This would be a great synergy.

Jim, Steven is working on this project, so we'll talk about whether the wheel is one of the graphics we use or not.

Brandon, doing an online store is a good idea and one we've explored already.  At this point, I think an online store may be Phase II for this project.  I'd like to test the market a bit first by taking orders for a shirt by a deadline, starting with the club and then a couple of other test markets.  The motivation for me to do this is my commitment to do a couple of fundraisers for the club this autumn, with a total goal of $1,000.  If we can net $400 for the tshirts in this initial effort, then I think it might make sense to do more shirts, set up an online store and the marketing apparatus those stores require to be successful.

In a couple of days, Steven and I will look through the suggested taglines and pick a handful that we think might work best.  Then we'll put up a Facebook poll and see what people like.  From that, we'll make our choices and design a shirt, set the prices and start taking orders, starting with CHAOS and then going to a couple of other homebrewing communities.

Back to the tagline ideas!

Brewsters, got started on

Brewsters, got started on designs, but this is a tough assignment, even getting a concept to a rough sketch is a bunch of work, and we have a bunch of ideas.

I figured a good first step would be looking at common beer shirt designs out there. BTW, Kim Leshinski has already done a "Whales Bro" design for CHAOS (see below.)

When Jim told me about the idea, I immediately thought of "Whalez, bro", even though I've had no idea of what you guys mean when you say that (which is like all the time.) Some say the phrase is douchey and over-used, but I like the idea we are all chasing the elusive perfect beer, so I started with whales.

"Dude, where's my carboy" made me chuckle, but I'm also weary we are going down a path of in-jokes that won't make for a universally appealing shirt that pays off.

Then again, maybe we should speak to the heart of the ultimate beer nerd?
Boollish needs a hug.

I like the attitude of Reed's "I Know Things" piece. I wanted to draw a pellicle, but that's pretty hard to do and I've already blown most of labor day (ditto for Rob's ideas.) My neighbor thinks we are all whack and didn't get any of the ideas, but I guess we could look at these as "conversation starters".

Looking at t-shirts as a fundraising driver, a big realty check is realizing novelty shirts will have limted appeal to niche groups and maybe we should just print CHAOS logos on a black shirt.

Anyhow, I'm off on vaction this week, so this is just design fodder for further discussion. I can get back to this after the 15th.

Thanks for the design ideas,

Thanks for the design ideas, Steven!   A lot of these suggestions lend themselves to some good graphics.

I made a Survey Monkey survey and posted it on the club Facebook page, Stop by and leave your responses - also, share the survey on your personal Facebook page so your friends can weigh in, too!

16 responses so far, and I Brew and I Know Things is in the lead by a hair, closely followed by Ales What Cures You and Hopsologist.  Head on over to the CHAOS Facebook page and take the survey.
