Cautionary Erlenmeyer flask tale

joefalck's picture

Forums:

If you're boiling your yeast starter in your flask, even if you think you can cautiously sift in DME little by little to avoid foam-over, you, my friend, couldn't be more wrong.  As soon as you're done cautiously sifting and proud of yourself for doing it, you'll turn around to put your funnel in the sink and just to spite you, the flask will turn in to a Wort Rocket shooting Boiling Wort into the upper reaches of your kitchen.

Brewhouse Water Losses

Forums:

I'll be brewing my first CHAOS beer this coming Saturday.

I'm calculating my water totals and am wondering if you can tell me:

How much wort is left in the bottom of the lauter tuns?

What percentage of water is boiled off in 1 hour?

How much loss there is to the wort chiller?

Any other losses I should know about?

Teaching Beer History

Forums:

I think I'd like to get together a lesson plan to teach a class on the history of ales, early ale vs. early beer, and the birth of modern beer.  Something along those lines.  If it goes well I'd also like to do a class on the history of beer in Chicago, going back to the begininng.  How should I go about this.  Should I design it for a presentation to the club, or the public, because those would look very different?  Because it could be something we offer to help boost recruitment.  Maybe hold a semi-public lecture at the Map Room or something if they'd have us (just an example).

Looking for a host - Sun Feb 23rd

Forums:

Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is the right place for the request - the instructions said to post in the comments section when I signed up but I didn't see one.

This will be my first brew at the club, Feb 23rd from about 9a - 4p.  I stopped by once to check it out already.  Met some great people and enjoyed the space.  I have about 6 or 8 brews under my belt at home so I don't really need any help.  Just access.

Thanks for any help,

Sean

Water Regulators & Neighbors

MarkWalters's picture

Forums:

It turns out the reason others lose pressure when we are running water is because the entire building shares one 3/4 in water main. Most of our fixtures are either 5/8 in or 3/4 in, which means if we turn them on full blast, there will be pressure loss.

To meet code & be a good neighbor, we have regulators on all of our fixtures. Orginally, they were all 1 GPM, which is tough for our use, so the pot fillers have been replaced with 2.2 GPM and the sink has 1.5 GPM regulators.

I know that makes it longer to fill your pot, but we have to live with it for now.
